SIRENA Project: A set of geographical data to address the issue of governance in the Senegal River Delta

This data comes from the SIRENA tool, created in January 2011 to build a set of organized and standardized geographic data for the Senegal River delta, with the goal of addressing governance issues in this area.

A partnership with academics, GIS technicians, protected area managers, users, etc. has been established.

An explicit request for research support was then made by the park's conservators and managers, as well as those of the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary (PNOD), for a tool to create, analyze, and manage geographic data to address land management issues, as well as scientific support for environmental monitoring of the delta's protected areas.

Statement: Created for a period of five years (2012-2016), the International Joint Laboratory (LMI) “Water Heritage and Territories” (LMI PATEO) is co-directed by the LEIDI laboratory (UGB) and the UMR PALOC, part of the IRD. PATEO is a joint research and teaching platform on the governance of the three transboundary deltas in the West African sub-region (Senegal River, Saloum-Niumi and Casamance-Geba). It aims to create reliable, up-to-date geographical information banks at the delta level in order to support all types of local sustainable development initiatives through innovative actions.
