Senegal River Delta - Network zoning and hydrographic structures within the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve

The data made available through this collection of linked elements comes from the SIRENA tool, created in January 2011 to build a set of organized and standardized geographic data for the Senegal River delta, with the aim of addressing the issue of governance in this area. A partnership with academics, GIS technicians, protected area managers, and users has been established.

An explicit request for research support was then made by the park's conservators and managers, as well as those of the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary (PNOD), for a tool to create, analyze, and manage geographic data to address land management issues, as well as scientific support for environmental monitoring of the delta's protected areas.

The hydrographic data includes:

- Zoning of the hydrographic network within the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (TBR). The data is derived from satellite image processing performed in ERDAS Imagine 8.5 using the 345 pseudo-true color composite directed classification method (red band in blue, PIR band in green, and MIR band in red). The base image corresponds to scene 205_049, which covers the Senegal River delta. Note that this image does not cover the entire TBR, as the Mauritanian portion, and in particular the northern area of the Chat Reserve, is not covered by this LANDSAT scene.

- Infrastructure including the Gandiol lighthouse, hydrographic structures, and facilities such as pontoons, landing stages, control posts, and the national park's infirmary.

Statement: Created for a period of five years (2012-2016), the International Joint Laboratory (LMI) “Water Heritage and Territories” (LMI PATEO) is co-directed by the LEIDI laboratory (UGB) and the UMR PALOC, part of the IRD. PATEO is a joint research and teaching platform on the governance of the three transboundary deltas in the West African sub-region (Senegal River, Saloum-Niumi and Casamance-Geba). It aims to create reliable, up-to-date geographical information banks at the delta level in order to support all types of local sustainable development initiatives through innovative actions.
